General comment Acrylonitrile is a colorless, volatile liquid with a pungent odor and the chemical formula 33C3H3N. It is primarily used as a monomer in the production of several significant polymers and copolymers, such as Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), Styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) resin, nitrile rubber, and acrylic fibers. Produced mainly through the ammoxidation of propylene, acrylonitrile is flammable and considered a possible human carcinogen, with exposure potentially causing irritation to the skin, eyes, and lungs. Its environmental release can be harmful to aquatic life, and as such, its production, handling, and disposal are often regulated. |
