General comment Alkali is a soluble salt obtained from the ashes of plants and consisting largely of potassium or sodium carbonate. It is a substance having marked basic properties. Alkali metals include lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), and francium (Fr). They react with water to form alkalies, which are strong bases capable of neutralizing acids. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is the most widely used industrial alkali. |
