General comment Alkyl ketene dimers (AKDs) are used as a component in various applications including producing hydrophobic paper under neutral pH conditions. They react with free hydroxyl groups to form beta-ketoester linkages, imparting hydrophobicity to cellulose. AKDs have a dual polarity structure with both polar and nonpolar components and can be synthesized with different carbon chain lengths. They are made from higher fatty acids and serve as a neutral sizing agent in pulp manufacturing. |
