Use advice for data set
When utilizing this data for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), attention should be directed towards the geographic specificity of the process, as this data pertains to nickel extraction from an ore located in Xinjiang Province, China. Therefore, the environmental impacts associated with this dataset should not be generalised to nickel production in other regions without proper regionalization consideration. Users should also note any assumptions made in the extraction and processing stages and ensure that these assumptions are consistent with the scope of their LCA study. Special attention should be given to the treatment of outputs, particularly with regard to recycling and waste management practices, to accurately reflect the potential environmental benefits and burdens.

General comment
Data on resource consumption, raw material input, energy consumption, pollutant discharge and waste disposal during the pyrometallurgical and refining stages were referred to the enterprise operation data published by China’s largest nickel metal production base in Gansu, which contributed more 80% of China’s electrolytic nickel production. The metal emission data caused by the storage of waste rock, tailings and slags referred to the leaching experiment results. The Chinese process-based LCI database provided data support for the background inventory.

Technical purpose
The electrolytic nickel production process described is intended for the creation of battery-grade primary nickel with a purity of 99.9% nickel content. This high-purity nickel is especially suited for the manufacturing of batteries, where material quality is critical for performance and longevity. The leaching electrowinning method ensures that the nickel extracted from the nickel-copper-cobalt ore in Xinjiang Province meets the stringent requirements necessary for use in advanced battery technology, such as lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and portable electronics.
