Use advice for data set When employing this data set for life cycle assessment or other environmental impact studies, consider the methodological advice that the functional unit is based on 1kg of milk production. Ensure accurate modeling of the various feeding stages and their associated resource consumption. Disregard minor feed components due to their small proportion. Data set users should also account for the specificity of the geographical location (Zhangye City) as regional variations might affect the representativeness of the data. Apply caution if extrapolating data to different contexts or locations without careful consideration of regional differences in dairy farming practices and resource availability.
Technical purpose of product or process The described dairy cow raising process is intended for the production of milk within agricultural operations. The data set represents the inputs required for milk production, specifically focusing on the feeding and water consumption of dairy cows. The feed is a blend of roughage and concentrate feed, where the concentrate is primarily made of corn, soybean meal, and wheat bran. This data set is relevant for agricultural sectors, dairy farmers, and dairy product manufacturers who focus on the different stages of dairy cow's life, namely, calf stage, growing stage, lactation stage, and dry milk period.
Classification
Class name : Hierarchy level
  • ILCD: Materials production / Food and renewable raw materials
General comment on data set The feed of dairy cows is composed of roughage and concentrate feed. Concentrate feed is composed of corn, soybean meal and wheat bran as the main raw materials, and other components account for a small proportion, so other components are ignored. Dairy cows have different feed consumption in different feeding stages, and their production can be divided into four stages: calf stage, growing stage, lactation stage and dry milk stage.

Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system LCA was used to evaluate the four livestock products, and to evaluate the resource consumption, product input and environmental emissions in the whole process from raw material production to final product production. The four livestock products were evaluated in the same evaluation model, and the impact degree of a certain type of environmental impact and its comprehensive impact on the environment were qualitatively and quantitatively assessed. Finally, the environmental impact indicators of producing 1kg beef, 1kg milk, 1kg pork and 1kg chicken eggs were obtained respectively. Through analyzing and comparing the environmental load of the production of four kinds of livestock products, suggestions were provided for the adjustment of the breeding structure of China's livestock industry and the production structure of livestock products. And through the field research of advancing animal husbandry in Zhangye City, learning from the development model of advancing animal husbandry cooperative, the development model of grassland agriculture in China was discussed.
