Process Data set: a local branded pure milk productions ; Dairy processing (en) en zh

Key Data Set Information
Location CD-SC-CN
Geographical representativeness description The milk source base is located at Hongya Country, Southwestern Sichuan Province, China, about 147 kilometres far from Chengdu City, the provincial capital. The diary processing plant is located at Pixian, suburb of Chengdu City, which is about 175 kilometres far from the milk source base. The branded milk is mainly distributed to the central Chengdu City, about 40 kilometres distances from the diary processing plant. The milk packaging waste is transported to the municipal landfill for final disposal, about 30 kilometres away from the central city.

Use advice for data set When using this LCA dataset, the focus should be on processes with a direct contribution to pure milk production, paying specific attention to energy and materials inputs as well as carbon emissions. Care should be taken in interpreting the simplified system boundary as it may not include all ancillary processes. For accurate life cycle impact assessments, users should consider the complete supply chain and end-of-life stages, which may require additional data beyond what is provided in this dataset. Inventory data in Table 2 should be used in conjunction with the specified methodology, and adjustments should be made when applying this data to different technological contexts or geographic locations.
Technical purpose of product or process The data set describes the production process of local branded pure milk, a dairy product processed in Sichuan Province, China. It is used in the food industry, specifically in the dairy sector, to provide consumers with pasteurized and packaged milk. The technical quality of the milk is suitable for direct consumption and potentially for use in creating other dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, and cream. The stages considered in the dataset include raw milk production, dairy product processing, product transportation, and packaging waste disposal.
Classification
Class name : Hierarchy level
  • ILCD: Materials production / Food and renewable raw materials
General comment on data set Specifically, a large amount of water is needed during the cooling and pre-heating of raw milk, as well as the pre-heating and sterilization of the liquid milk.

Functional Unit The Tetra Pak 1litre pure liquid milk is selected to assess its lifecycle based carbon footprint.
Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system This study only focused on processes that directly contributed to pure milk production, that is, only the effects of energy and material input and carbon emissions, as shown in Figure 1. The system boundary of milk life cycle is thus simplified and divided into four stages, namely, raw milk production, dairy product processing, product transportation and packaging waste disposal.

LCI method and allocation
Type of data set Unit process, single operation
Deviation from LCI method principle / explanations None
Deviations from LCI method approaches / explanations Compared with the conventional LCA, the process of life cycle impact assessment is simplified in this study, as it mainly uses different categories of indicators to elaborate results of life cycle inventory (Nigri et al., 2014).
Deviation from modelling constants / explanations None
Data sources, treatment and representativeness
Deviation from data cut-off and completeness principles / explanations None
Data selection and combination principles Table 2 shows the inventory data of the dairy processing stage. Specifically, a large amount of water is needed during the cooling and pre-heating of raw milk, as well as the pre-heating and sterilization of the liquid milk. Electricity is mainly used for operating the equipment, and fuels are used to generate the steam required for the pre-heating and heating of the sterilizer (Riera et al., 2013). Cardboard paper is used to produce the outer packaging for the milk.
Deviation from data selection and combination principles / explanations None
Deviation from data treatment and extrapolations principles / explanations None
