General comment Coke is a fuel with a high carbon content and few impurities, usually made from coal. It is produced by heating coal in the absence of air, a process known as pyrolysis. During this process, volatile constituents of the coal, including water, tar, and gases, are driven off. The result is a solid, carbon-rich material that burns with little smoke and high heat, making it ideal for use as a fuel in industrial settings, particularly in blast furnaces for the production of iron. Coke has a porous structure, provides a steady and controllable heat, and is an important element in metallurgical processes.
