General comment Alcohol-based fuels are used in automotive applications, particularly as high-octane fuels for racing cars. They burn more completely and thus produce lower emissions. Two types of alcohol are distinguished: ethanol and methanol. Ethanol is a fuel made from ethyl alcohol, commonly distilled from plant sources such as corn, grain, grass, and sugar. It can also be made from discarded newspapers and other organic substances. The plant materials used in its production are known collectively as biomass, making it a renewable, relatively eco-friendly fuel for vehicles.
