General comment | Alumina, also known as the oxide of aluminum, occurs both in pure form as corundum and in hydrated forms (as in bauxite). It is widely used in a variety of industrial abrasive materials due to its superior hardness and strength. Alumina can also be used as a coating to protect against abrasion and in refractory products due to its high melting point. In most industrial applications, corundum has been replaced by synthetic materials such as alumina, an aluminum oxide made from bauxite. |
