General comment | Pig iron is an intermediate good used by the iron industry in the production of steel. It is developed by smelting iron ore in a blast furnace and has a high carbon content, typically 3.8-4.7%, along with silica and other constituents of dross. It can be worked into wrought iron, gray iron, or ductile iron depending on the process and grade. Pig iron is a type of iron ore that is heated in the blast furnace and cast in molds. It is a solid solution of carbon and other constituents in a particular form of iron known as austenite. |
