General comment | Yeasts are eukaryotic, single-celled microorganisms classified as members of the fungus kingdom. They originated hundreds of millions of years ago, and at least 1,500 species are currently recognized. They constitute 1% of all described fungal species. Yeast is an egg-shaped single-cell fungus that is only visible with a microscope. It takes 20,000,000,000 yeast cells to weigh one gram. Yeasts reproduce asexually by budding. |
