3-Hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid is an organic compound with the formula C 10 H 6 (OH)(CO 2 H). It is one of the several carboxylic acids derived from 2-naphthol. It is a common precursor to azo dyes and pigments. It is prepared by carboxylation of 2-naphthol via the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction. 3-Hydroxy-2-naphthalenecarboxylic acid is a weak acid with pKa of 2.79(2), indicating that this compound will exist as an anion in the environment, and anions do not volatilize from water or soil surfaces.
