General comment | Hydrogen chloride is a hydrogen halide with the chemical formula HCl. At room temperature, it is a colourless gas, which forms white fumes of hydrochloric acid upon contact with atmospheric water vapor. It may be formed by the direct combination of chlorine (Cl 2) gas and hydrogen (H 2) gas. It can irritate the skin, nose, eyes, throat, and larynx. Exposure to liquid hydrogen chloride may cause frostbite. |
