General comment | Titanium tetrachloride, also known as titanium(IV) chloride or TiCl4, is a colorless volatile liquid that hydrolyzes in air with the emission of white clouds. It is used in the Kroll process for converting titanium ores into titanium metal. Despite titanium being the fourth most-abundant metal in the earth's crust, it is not commonly found in its pure form and is typically present in minerals. The production of titanium tetrachloride involves processing titanium concentrates with carbon and chlorine gas, followed by distillation for purification. |
