General comment Acetyl chloride is a reagent for the preparation of esters and amides of acetic acid, used in the derivatization of alcohols and amines. It is a colorless pungent fuming liquid made by chlorination of acetic acid or its derivatives. Acetyl chloride reacts vigorously with water to generate gaseous HCl. It is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor and is an important reagent in organic synthesis. Acetyl chloride is a highly reactive compound due to the presence of a reactive acyl chloride functional group.
