Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE, UHMW) is a subset of the thermoplastic polyethylene. It has extremely long chains, with a molecular mass usually between 3.5 and 7.5 million amu. UHMWPE was first polymerized in the 1950's and the first UHMWPE fibers were commercialized in the late 1970's. It is composed of very long chains of polyethylene with a high percentage of parallel orientation and high level of crystallinity. UHMWPE fibers are produced via a gel-spinning process.
