Use advice for data set | Users of this LCA data set should be aware that the data applies specifically to the production of alumina intended for metallurgical purposes, using bauxite as the precursor, and is representative of the technological practices in 2008. When applying this data in life cycle assessments, incorporate data consideration for potential updates or technological changes that may have occurred post-2008. Background data originates from the Chinese-specific LCA database, focusing only on the processes relevant to PA, SA, electricity, and other background data as described. It's important to ensure appropriateness in regional context and alignment with the goal and scope of the assessment, and to pay attention to the methodological consistency, especially when dealing with international comparisons or integrating with global data sets. |
Technical purpose of product or process | Alumina produced through this process is primarily used for metallurgical applications. It serves as a critical raw material in the aluminum production industry, where it is used in the conversion of bauxite into aluminum metal through the Hall–Héroult process. This type of alumina ensures appropriate characteristics for electrolysis and is suitable for large-scale production in the aluminum industry. |

Data selection and combination principles | The data in this study refers to the LCA data of PA, SA, electricity, and other background data. The PA data were obtained from statistical data sources, and the SA data were mainly obtained from the literatures. The background data were mainly derived from the Chinese localization LCA database CAS RCEES 2018, which was established by the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences and covers LCA data for energy, materials, transportation, waste management etc. | ||||
